Charles Cardale Babington (1808-1895) was born on 23 November 1808 in Ludlow, Shropshire. He studied at St John's College in Cambridge (B.A. 1830, M.A. 1833). Although he was at first inclined towards entomology, he soon became mainly interested in botany. He joined the Linnean Society of London in 1830 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1851.
